Of all the themes to emerge as important in fighting IUU fishing, what stood out strongest was the need for better cooperation and sharing of information and resources, be it at national, regional or international scales, across agencies and across disciplines. Nowhere was this better illustrated than in the case of the Western Central Pacific tuna fisheries where regional cooperation between island states has seen not only a significant reduction in IUU fishing, but more sustainable harvesting and a fairer and more equitable relationship with foreign fishing fleets and interests. This shows that the war on IUU fishing can be won, provided there is political will to facilitate better education, improved cooperation, implementation of international instruments, and improvement of regulatory regimes and enforcement capacity."
