520 | 3 | _aUndiluted coal tar net preservative does not easily dry in a warm climate, thus making the net too heavy, messy, and hard to handle. To solve this problem, a coal tar net preservative diluted with gasoline was developed with the purpose of revolutionizing net preservation in the Philippines, where tan bark extract and blood are commonly used. The diluted preservative reduces the amount of coal tar deposited in the gear to an extent that the increase in weight is quite negligible. Diluted coal tar showed preserving qualities on cotton twines exposed to the atmospheric weather and on those immersed continuously or intermittently in brackish and marine waters. However, the imported diluted coal tar containing rosin showed better preserving qualities. | |
