The Philippine Journal of Fisheries Volume 8, Issue no. 2 ( 1960), page 125 - 150Abstract: This paper presents the successful introduction and development in the Philippines of the one-boat system of modern purse seining. Modus operandi, progress of development, and characteristics of the operation are described. The term “modern purse seining” as used in this paper means the mechanized operation of a purse seine net on board a purse seiner equipped with modern facilities such as purse winch for pursing the net, power block to haul the net back into the boat, and an electronic fish detector to locate and detect fish schools. Necessarily, the purse seiner should be sturdily built, stable, and with powerful propulsion and auxiliary engines. Likewise, the purse net should be of suitable materials and heavily constructed to withstand mechanized fishing operations.
